Guwahati: In a significant breakthrough in Assam’s agricultural sphere, the researchers at Assam Agricultural University in Jorhat have developed three new varieties of vegetables — two types of mustard greens (lai xaak) and a chilli variant.
The new varieties — Kajali and Laika (mustard greens) and Prabali (chilli) — offer high yields and shorter production cycles.
“These varieties will aid our farmers with increase in production and shorter crop cycle; thereby boosting their income,” said Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
With the development of three new varieties of crops, Assam Agricultural University has set a new milestone in innovation and sustainability.
Kajali is characterized by its unique black colour, whereas Laika exhibits a conventional green shade and is expected to have a taste similar to traditional lai xaak. Both varieties mature and produce crops within a span of 85 to 90 days, yielding a remarkable output of 400 to 450 quintals per hectare.
The Prabali chilli, projected to yield a substantial 120 to 130 quintals per hectare, is distinguished by its exceptionally intense fiery flavour, making it a preferred choice for those who appreciate spicy cuisine.
These new varieties have been developed to optimize agricultural output and provide superior nutritional content.
