Barpeta: The Aadhaar enrolment initiative for students in Barpeta district, Assam, has picked up pace under the leadership of District Commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha.
With the aim of ensuring every eligible student has their unique identification number, the district administration has intensified its efforts in schools across the region.
Updating Aadhaar biometrics is mandatory for children in two age brackets: 5–7 years and 15–17 years.
Delays in these updates have caused issues for students applying for competitive exams like NEET, JEE, and CUET, as Aadhaar authentication is often required for submitting application forms.
Since August 2024, Aadhaar enrolment and update camps have been set up in schools across Barpeta.
As of now, the initiative has been successfully carried out in 158 schools, leading to the biometric updates of 21,413 students and the registration of 2,284 new Aadhaar enrolments.
To further streamline the process, special camps are being organised for students who are yet to register, ensuring minimal disruption to their academic activities.

Mobile units have also been deployed to reach students in remote and inaccessible areas, making the drive inclusive and efficient.
“Aadhaar is essential for accessing government benefits like scholarships and registering for competitive exams. We are committed to covering all students in Barpeta under this initiative,” said Geetashri Lachit, ACS, Additional District Commissioner and Nodal Officer for Aadhaar in the district.
Parents and school authorities have been urged to cooperate by providing necessary documents to expedite the process.
Students who have already enrolled are encouraged to verify their Aadhaar details to avoid future discrepancies.
