GUWAHATI: A day after his initial bail plea was rejected, Aftab Uddin Mollah, the arrested MLA from Goalpara, was granted bail on Thursday.
The Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Guwahati reportedly approved his bail, requiring a Rs 10,000 PR bond for his release.
Mollah had been taken into custody following allegations of making derogatory remarks against Hindu priests and saints. He was remanded to one-day police custody on Wednesday, but his subsequent bail plea was initially denied.
The arrest of Mollah occurred in Guwahati on November 7, subsequent to an FIR filed by a resident from Guwahati’s Bhetapara locality with the Deputy Commissioner of Police, East Zone.
Yesterday, the Congress MLA was produced before the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) of Kamrup-Metro district in Assam, leading to his one-day police custody.
Wasting no time in damage control, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) had issued a show-cause notice to Mollah on November 8, following his derogatory remarks aimed at the Hindu community.
Legal proceedings against him were initiated, and the Congress party publicly assured its commitment to taking appropriate disciplinary actions.
In an official circular, the Congress party stated, “Regarding Congress MLA Aftab Uddin Mollah, legal proceedings have been initiated, and steps have been taken from the party disciplinary perspective.”
Previously on November 4, Mollah, during a public meeting held in Goalpara sparked strong reactions from the people of Assam with his derogatory comments accusing temple priests and Namgharias as rapists.
