The Indian Army has paid tribute to Sepoy Sunilal Muchahary, a soldier of The Madras Regiment, who lost his life in a landslide in North Sikkim while serving in a high-altitude operational area.
His unwavering dedication to duty and service to the nation have been hailed as an enduring legacy.
Born on May 20, 1990, in Pub Makra village, Chirang district of Assam, Sepoy Sunilal joined the Indian Army on June 24, 2012.
Over 13 years of service, he earned a reputation for his discipline, resilience, and dedication across some of the country’s most challenging and sensitive frontiers.
Known as a skilled marksman and accomplished sportsman, he brought accolades to his battalion while earning the admiration of his peers and seniors.
On May 23, Sepoy Sunilal went missing during a catastrophic landslide in Chatten, North Sikkim.
For nine days, the Indian Army conducted relentless search operations under treacherous conditions, employing modern radar systems and engineering equipment to locate and recover his body.
His mortal remains were finally found and returned to his native village with full military honours.
The solemn journey back to Pub Makra village in Assam saw the participation of civil and military dignitaries, where Sepoy Sunilal’s last rites were conducted with deep respect and reverence.

In his final moments, Sepoy Sunilal was performing his operational duties in an environment marked by immense risk, embodying the Indian Army’s motto of “Service Before Self.”
