GUWAHATI: An armed United Liberation Front of Asom – Independent (ULFA-I) cadre is on the loose in upper Assam, the police informed on Friday.

Superintendent of Police (SP), Tinsukia district, Gaurav Abhijit Dilip, has told a national news agency that a manhunt is on to nab the militant, who is said to be carrying explosives, based on the information provided by one Achyutanand Neog alias Niloy Asom.

Neog was detained by the security forces in the aftermath of a grenade attack near an Army camp in Tinsukia district on November 22.

“The cadre revealed during the interrogation that he was instructed to carry out bomb blasts near the army camps or in crowded places, and failure to do so will lead to severe punishment, possibly execution,” the officer said.

According to the police, Neog, believed to be the mastermind behind the attack, has told the security agencies that another cadre is still at large in the region.

“Neog has briefed us about the movement of the second cadre in the area. We are hopeful that he will be arrested soon,” the SP was quoted by the press as saying.

Informing the press, the police said that the detainee has revealed the proscribed outfit’s plans and “at least two” cadres were sent to trigger bomb blasts near army camps in upper Assam with the intention of creating panic.”

“Neog was sent by the outfit to trigger a blast at Bordirak village under Margherita subdivision of Tinsukia district, along the Arunachal-Assam border,” the press quoted SP Dilip.

Earlier, Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh had issued a stern warning, promising strict action against those responsible for the attack.
