The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has approached the State Commission for Women, alleging that women leaders of the party faced assault, harassment, and derogatory remarks by BJP affiliates during the “Parivartan Yatra” convoy on NH-15 at Bihguri.
The complaint has been filed by Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, highlighting that senior Congress leaders were targeted while the rally was moving from Tezpur towards Dhekiajuli.
As per the complaint, the women leaders were heckled, verbally abused and also allegedly physically assaulted, resulting in injuries.
Saikia said that the women leaders of the party who were assaulted are senior state party spokesperson Rupa Kalita Das, Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress general secretary Trishna Bora Kakati, and Sonitpur district Mahila Congress president Sampurna Saikia.

He urged the Assam State Women’s Commission to launch an inquiry and take action under relevant women’s rights laws.
“The assailants reportedly heckled our women leaders and made obscene and derogatory remarks in public, thereby outraging their dignity and modesty. When one of the leaders stepped forward in an attempt to protect the convoy, she was assaulted and sustained injuries,” Saikia wrote in the letter.
The incident reportedly occurred near a bus carrying Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi, AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh; and other MPs.
The APCC submission claims the material collected clearly reflects behavior amounting to a violation of women’s rights and warrants investigation under Section 10(3) of the Assam State Commission for Women Act, 1994.
