GUWAHATI: In a bid to strengthen anti-poaching efforts and safeguard the state’s rhino population, the Anti-Rhino Poaching Task Force convened its 2nd meeting at the Convention Centre in Kohora, Kaziranga, on Thursday.
Chaired by Harmeet Singh, Special Director General of Police (Spl. DGP), the meeting brought together forest and police officials from the four major rhino-bearing regions.
These officials delivered presentations, outlining strategies and addressing challenges faced in rhino protection.
“Strategies to bolster Rhino protection, enhance coordination, cover new vulnerabilities & strengthen existing networks were deliberated,” highlighted Spl. DGP Singh in a social media post.
One of the key recommendations discussed during the meeting was the need to address the growing rhino population and their increased movement into newer areas, such as Bura Chapori and Majuli, over the past two years.
To address this, the Task Force suggested “mapping the vulnerability” of these newer areas and set up forest camps and patrolling routes.
Additionally, the Task Force proposed the inclusion of additional members in the Committee from Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat territorial divisions, and the also commandants of the Assam Forest Protection Force.
This move aims to enhance coordination and strengthen surveillance efforts.
Furthermore, the Task Force recommended conducting regular coordination meetings at the District level in all rhino-bearing areas.
This initiative is expected to enhance operational abilities and improve response mechanisms to combat poaching activities effectively.
