GUWAHATI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to chair a crucial meeting aimed at evaluating the states’ readiness to combat floods during the monsoon season.
The meeting will focus on devising comprehensive flood management strategies to mitigate the impact of floods, which annually devastate various parts of the country, as reported by a national news agency citing a Home Ministry official.
In the Northeast, Assam is currently grappling with severe flooding that has affected approximately 3.90 lakh people across 19 districts, according to officials.
Tragically, this year’s floods, landslides, and storms have claimed the lives of 37 individuals, with one person reported missing.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday, took to social media to provide updates, highlighting the critical situation in Karimganj district where the Kushiyara River has surged above the danger level.
The flood has affected 10 districts, 27 Revenue Circles, and 968 villages, impacting a staggering 1,17,212 people, he wrote in a social media post.

Presently, 134 relief camps and 94 relief distribution centres are operational, providing shelter and assistance to 17,661 displaced individuals, the Chief Minister further informed.
Earlier on Saturday, Chief Minister Sarma acknowledged the severity of the flood situation, highlighting that several tributaries of the Brahmaputra River are flowing perilously high.
Despite these challenges, he assured the public that the Brahmaputra River itself has not yet breached the danger mark.
He also mentioned that while the state government has not requested central assistance thus far, they possess sufficient funds to manage the crisis effectively.
Karimganj district remains the worst affected, with over 250,000 individuals impacted, followed by Darrang and Tamulpur.
Today’s meeting will update the Centre on the current flood situations in states and facilitate coordinated efforts among various agencies to provide swift assistance to affected regions across the country.
