Guwahati: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) general secretary Rafiqul Islam dismissed Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s allegations that Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has “Pakistan links”, terming is as “political rhetoric”.
He questioned why the state government waited for two years to take action if the allegations were genuine.
Speaking to ANI on Sunday, Rafiqul Islam said, “If Gaurav Gogoi and Elizabeth Gogoi have ties with Pakistan, action should be taken against them. Why have they been waiting for two years? HM Amit Shah and PM Modi continue to listen to his speeches. I don’t think this is anything more than political rhetoric.”
Earlier today, addressing a press conference held in Guwahati, CM Sarma alleged that Gaurav Gogoi has links with Pakistan, adding that the claims are serious in nature and must be probed by a central agency.

He alleged that Gogoi, his British wife Elizabeth Colburn and Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh have a “deeper connection”, and information from IB was secretly provided to the neighbouring nation.
Addressing the media briefing, CM Sarma said the state-level Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case, originally formed to examine alleged anti-India activities, and had gathered sensitive material that goes “beyond the scope of a state probe”.
He reiterated that in view of national security implications, the Assam Cabinet has decided to transfer the case to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for further investigation by a central agency such as the NIA, CBI, or others as determined by the Centre.
