GUWAHATI: Former Chief of the Indian Air Force, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, has been appointed as the new Chancellor of Assam University, Silchar. He takes over from the renowned poet, lyricist, and director Gulzar, whose five-year term came to an end a few months ago. The appointment was officially confirmed on Saturday.
Raha, who served as the 21st Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force, brings a distinguished career to this new role. His tenure as the Chief of the Air Staff extended from December 31, 2013, to December 31, 2016. During this time, he played a pivotal role in leading the Indian Air Force and contributed significantly to the nation’s defence.
Furthermore, Raha assumed the crucial position of Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee, a position reserved for India’s most senior military officer. In this capacity, he provided valuable counsel to the government and worked to enhance cooperation and coordination among the various branches of the Indian armed forces.
Born on December 26, 1954, into a Bengali family, Raha’s journey began in Baidyabati, West Bengal. He received his early education at Sainik School Purulia. His family had a strong presence in the community, with his father serving as a respected community doctor.
The Chancellor of the university is a prestigious and honorary position that represents the institution on various ceremonial and ambassadorial occasions. Assam University, established in 1994, is located in Dargakona, approximately 20 kilometers from Silchar.
Raha’s appointment as the Chancellor of Assam University reflects his dedication to education and his continued commitment to serving the nation in various capacities. This appointment is seen as a significant step in strengthening the ties between the armed forces and the academic community.
