Guwahati: The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has officially renominated Birendra Prasad Baishya, a veteran leader and former Union minister, as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Assam, scheduled for June 19.
AGP’s general secretary Ponakon Baruah confirmed late Saturday that the party’s central committee had unanimously decided to field Baishya again.
His current Rajya Sabha term is set to conclude later this month.
Baishya, a prominent face in Assam’s regional politics, has previously served one term in the Lok Sabha and two in the Rajya Sabha.
His renomination underlines AGP’s continued confidence in his parliamentary experience and political stature.

The election will fill two Upper House seats from Assam. In line with their alliance arrangement, AGP and BJP—both partners in the ruling coalition—will contest one seat each.
The BJP has nominated Kanad Purkayastha, a state secretary of the party and the son of senior leader Kabindra Purkayastha, for the other seat.
With a clear majority in the Assam Legislative Assembly, the BJP-AGP alliance is expected to comfortably retain both seats in the Rajya Sabha.
