Guwahati: The Assam government has imposed an immediate ban on the inter-district transport of live pigs following an “alarming” surge in African Swine Fever (ASF) cases across the state, officials said.
An order issued by the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department on Sunday also prohibited the sale of pork in seven districts that have recorded a high concentration of ASF cases.
According to the order, ASF cases have been rising at an alarming rate since January, with 297 epicentres reported across almost all districts, and a heavier caseload in seven districts — Dhemaji, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar, Darrang, Jorhat and Dibrugarh.
“ASF cases have been “alarmingly rising” across the state with no bound since January this year, with 297 epicentres reported, spreading to almost all districts with more concentration in seven of them,” the order said.
The disease, which carries a 100 per cent mortality rate, has severely impacted the state’s piggery sector, the order noted. It added that 84 new epicentres were detected in October alone.
“During the month of October 2025 alone, 84 epicentres were notified in the state,” it stated.

In view of the situation and under provisions of the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009, the inter-district movement of live pigs in the state has been banned for the time being with immediate effect, and until further notice to prevent further spread of the disease, it added.
