GUWAHATI: A team of ten researchers from Aaranyak, a leading environmental NGO, recently participated in a district-level workshop on ‘Seasonal Livelihood Mapping and Community-based Participatory Planning’ held in Assam’s Nagaon district.
The event was jointly organized by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the Assam Agriculture Department and the Nagaon District Administration.
The workshop was a part of the ENACT-Assam project (Enhancing Climate Adaptation of Vulnerable Communities through Nature-based Solutions and Gender-transformative Approaches in Assam) being implemented by the WFP and the Agriculture Department.
Aaranyak has been selected as the local agency to conduct preliminary field studies in selected Nagaon villages as part of this initiative.
The goal of the ENACT-Assam project is to mitigate disaster risk, enhance preparedness, foster climate adaptation and improve climate resilience in the agriculture sector of the state, especially among vulnerable livelihood groups that are affected by climatic, socio-economic, environmental, or disaster-related risks.
The project has been designed to improve capacities for climate adaptation at the community level, promote sustainable farming practices and diversified rural livelihoods, and build resilient food systems.
Aaranyak will carry out the Seasonal Livelihood Mapping (SLM) and Community-based Participatory Planning (CBPP) exercises in seventeen villages in Nagaon District.

These methodologies are aimed at promoting a bottom-up planning approach at the community level that is essential to facilitate the participation of communities in development planning.
A host of dignitaries, including District Commissioner Narendra Kr. Shah, attended the workshop and interacted with the participants on a range of issues relating to agriculture, climate change and food security scenario in the district.
