Guwahati: Aaranyak marked World Wildlife Day on March 3 with a series of engaging activities aimed at fostering wildlife awareness among local youth.
Held at the Kohora River Basin in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, the events included birdwatching, a cleanliness drive, and film screenings.
The birdwatching session introduced participants to the diverse avian species of the region, igniting interest in bird conservation.
Youths from nearby villages learned to use birdwatching equipment, identify bird species, and appreciate the intricate connection between the ethnic Karbi community’s culture and local wildlife.
Over an hour, participants identified 25 bird species, gaining practical experience in observing and protecting nature.
Following the birdwatching activity, participants led a “clean the village” drive, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a healthy environment for wildlife. This hands-on initiative reinforced the role of communities in conservation efforts.
The day concluded with two film screenings at Phumen Engti village, attended by 72 participants from neighbouring villages.

Manas and People explored the symbiotic relationship between communities and forests, while Delhi Safari, an animated film, delivered a conservation message in an engaging format.
The event successfully combined education, entertainment, and community participation to deepen appreciation for wildlife conservation.
Aaranyak’s efforts align with its commitment to biodiversity preservation, ecosystem restoration, and supporting indigenous communities in the Kaziranga-Karbi Anglong and Manas landscapes.
The initiative was supported by IUCN-KfW and the US Fish and Wildlife Service, highlighting Aaranyak’s dedication to sustainable livelihoods and environmental awareness.
