Golaghat (Assam): Tension flared along the Assam-Nagaland border after suspected miscreants from Nagaland allegedly set ablaze nearly 90 houses in Golaghat district’s Uriamghat area in the early hours of Friday, officials said.
The incident occurred at Tengatal under Sector B of Sarupathar when villagers were asleep.
According to preliminary reports, the attackers crossed over from Nagaland, torched houses, and fired several rounds in the air, sparking panic among residents of the Muslim-dominated area.
Startled by the sound of gunfire, villagers fled their homes and took shelter in nearby forested areas.
Though no casualties have been reported so far, officials confirmed that the fire caused extensive damage to property and household belongings.
A senior district official said the assailants claimed ownership of the land and ordered the residents to vacate before setting the houses on fire.
Soon after the attack, teams from the civil administration, police, forest department, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) rushed to the site to bring the situation under control.
Authorities said the area remains tense but stable as security has been tightened to prevent further escalation.
