GUWAHATI: The 7th Assam Rifles recently commemorated the 33rd anniversary of Operation Dudhi, a defining moment in India’s security history, celebrated for its unparalleled success in counter-insurgency operations.

Conducted in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir on May 5, 1991, Operation Dudhi remains a testament to the bravery and valour of the Indian Security Forces.

This landmark operation, led by Nb Sub Padam Bahadur Chhetri, Kirti Chakra, and his team of 14 Jawans, stands out as one of the most successful counter-insurgency endeavours ever undertaken.

Deployed at Dudhi post in Chowkibal Area, Kupwara District of Kashmir, the team executed a small-team-led operation with exceptional courage and precision, resulting in the neutralisation of 72 terrorists, apprehension of 13 others, and the recovery of 118 weapons, largely comprising AK-47 series rifles.

At the commemoration event presided over by Lt. Gen PC Nair, Directorate General of Assam Rifles, retired Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and Other Ranks (OR) who participated in the operation were felicitated.

The occasion provided an opportunity for these veterans to share their experiences and inspire the younger generation with tales of bravery and selflessness.

The exemplary leadership of Nb Sub Padam Bahadur Chhetri earned him the prestigious Kirti Chakra, while Rifleman Ram Kumar Arya and Rifleman Kameshwar Prasad were honoured posthumously for their supreme sacrifice.

The ceremony also recognised the gallantry of other team members, with awards including one Shurya Chakra, two Sena Medals, one GOC-in-C Northern Command Commendation Card, and nine Director General Commendation Cards.

Col Vikrant Gupta, Commandant 7 Assam Rifles, expressed pride in honouring the heroes of Operation Dudhi, emphasising the battalion’s commitment to honouring their legacy and sacrifices.

The ceremony included a wreath-laying ceremony to pay homage to the fallen soldiers, followed by interactions with Assam Rifles Ex-Servicemen, Veer Naris, and their families.

The presence of Lt Gen Nair, DG AR, underscored the Assam Rifles’ dedication to its veterans and their families.

Gen. Nair lauded the unwavering commitment and bravery displayed by the soldiers during Operation Dudhi, highlighting their enduring legacy as an inspiration to future generations.

The interaction between Gen Nair, and the Ex-Servicemen and Veer Naris served to strengthen the bond between the forces and the heroes who have served the nation with valour and dedication, reinforcing the spirit of camaraderie and gratitude within the military fraternity.
