Morigaon: Five prisoners on Friday managed to escape from the Morigaon District Jail in Central Assam.
According to reports, the jailbreak took place between 1 AM and 2 AM on Friday.
The prisoners reportedly broke one iron grille of the cell and used bed sheets and blankets to make a rope to scale the 20-feet-high boundary wall of the Morigaon District Jail.
Devashish Sharma, the District Commissioner of Morigaon district told Northeast News that all the five under-trial prisoners were accused of cases filed under the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act.
The Prison Department officials said the five under-trial prisoners were arrested in different cases from Morigaon and Sonitpur districts.
Three were arrested for cases registered at the Laharighat police station, while one person was arrested from Moirabari and the other person was arrested under Tezpur police station areas.
A massive search operation has been launched in Morigaon, Nagaon and Kamrup (Metro) districts, the officials said.
The District Magistrate has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
The inquiry will look into the entire incident of jail break and will try to find out if there were any lapses on the part of the jail security personnel, Sharma said.
The inquiry team will also try to find out the possibilities of involvement of any jail staff in the incident of jail break.
