Guwahati: An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter Scale struck the central part of Assam on Monday ( January 5).
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the tremors hit around 5:15 am in Morigaon district, at a depth of 50 km.
“EQ of M: 5.1, On: 05/01/2026 04:17:40 IST, Lat: 26.37 N, Long: 92.29 E, Depth: 50 Km, Location: Morigaon, Assam,” the NCS posted on X.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property, officials said, though residents reported feeling mild to moderate tremors in parts of central Assam. Authorities are monitoring the situation.
The quake was felt across several districts of Assam, including Kamrup Metropolitan, Nagaon, East Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, Hojai, Dima Hasao, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar and Goalpara.
A few hours before the tremors in Assam, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.9 on the Richter Scale hit Gomati, Tripura, around 3:30 am on Monday.

The northeastern region of India falls within one of the country’s highest seismic zones and is highly vulnerable to earthquakes. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged residents to remain calm and adhere to standard safety protocols during seismic events.
