Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that wages of tea garden workers will be increased from March 1, a move expected to benefit thousands of workers across the state amid long-standing demands for higher daily wages.
CM Sarma announced several major policy announcements during the Budget Session on Thursday, covering welfare measures, investment initiatives and employment ahead of Assam Assembly elections.
On the investment front, the Chief Minister said that 20 Japanese companies are scheduled to visit Jagiroad on February 28 to explore opportunities for setting up industries. The visit is part of the state government’s push to attract foreign investment and strengthen Assam’s manufacturing base.
Boosting employment generation, CM Sarma pledged that if his government is re-elected, 55,000 jobs will be provided within the first three years of the new term, specifically in the Education Department.

Additionally, Sarma stated that 5,000 new appointments in the Education Department will be made before the elections.
Further, the Chief Minister said that the long-pending Kopili Hydro Electric Project will be completed within the next 10 days. He informed that the project will generate 150 megawatts of electricity, while repair and restoration work of an additional 25 MW capacity at the Kopili plant is currently underway.
CM Sarma asserted that strengthening power infrastructure remains a top priority for the government to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply across the state.
The Chief Minister projected an ambitious economic vision, stating that Assam aims to become a Rs 10 lakh crore economy by 2028. He claimed that the state’s economy has grown by 45 percent over the past five years, positioning Assam among the fastest-growing states in the country.
