GUWAHATI: A total of 416 individuals were arrested during the third phase of Assam’s ongoing crackdown against child marriage, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Sunday.
The latest phase of the campaign commenced on the night of December 21-22, with police registering 335 cases related to child marriage.
All those arrested are set to be presented in court on Sunday.
Chief Minister Sarma emphasised the state’s commitment to eradicating child marriage in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“Assam continues its fight against child marriage. In Phase 3 operations launched on the night of Dec 21-22, 416 arrests were made and 335 cases registered. The arrested individuals will be produced in court today. We will continue to take bold steps to end this social evil,” he wrote.
The state government has been conducting its drive against child marriage in multiple phases throughout 2023.

The first phase in February saw 3,483 arrests and 4,515 cases registered, while the second phase in October resulted in 915 arrests and 710 cases registered.
This systematic campaign is part of Assam’s broader effort to eliminate child marriage, a deeply rooted social issue.
The government remains resolute in its mission to protect young lives and ensure the implementation of laws that uphold their rights and well-being.
