Morigaon: Assam Police on Saturday arrested four individuals, including a college lecturer, for allegedly running a fake job racket involving the Tata Group’s upcoming semiconductor manufacturing unit in Jagiroad, Morigaon district.
The accused are said to have duped several job seekers by promising them employment in the proposed facility, collecting lakhs of rupees in the process.
According to police sources, the group targeted unemployed youths in the Morigaon and Nagaon districts through fake recruitment campaigns circulated via WhatsApp groups.
The operation was allegedly led by Tarikul Ahmed, who posed as an engineer affiliated with the semiconductor project.
The group reportedly issued counterfeit interview and appointment letters to make the scam appear legitimate.
One of the arrested individuals is a lecturer in the Economics department at a college in Nagaon district, police confirmed.
Investigators found that substantial sums of money had been deposited into the account of one of the accused, identified as Islam.
“This was a carefully planned scam that misused the name of a prestigious industrial initiative to exploit job-seeking youth,” said a senior police officer.
“The accused fabricated official-looking documents and used digital platforms to create a false sense of authenticity.”
