Guwahati: An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale struck parts of Northeast India on Tuesday, at around 8:25 pm.
The tremor was felt across several districts, including Kamrup, Nalbari, and Goalpara in Assam, as well as parts of Meghalaya.
No casualties or significant damage have been reported yet.
The earthquake occurred against the backdrop of severe flooding in the region.
Over the past week, incessant monsoon rains have led to swollen rivers, including the Brahmaputra and its tributaries, inundating vast areas.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 5.5 lakh people have been affected, with over 36 fatalities.
The situation has prompted authorities to issue advisories and deploy emergency response teams to assist affected communities.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Guwahati has forecasted light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by light thunder and surface winds, in isolated places over Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, and Nalbari in the next three hours.
Residents in these areas are advised to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines.
In related news, a brief but intense storm struck Guwahati city on Monday, disrupting power supply.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, coordinating with local agencies to provide relief and ensure public safety. Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels and exercise caution during adverse weather conditions.
