Guwahati: Two suspected jihadis, including a minor were arrested on Sunday at Lahorighat in Central Assam’s Morigaon district.
Official sources said, acting on a tip-off, Assam Police caught the two suspected jihadis from a hideout at South Senimari village near Lahorighat.
The two suspected jihadis have been identified as Islam Mandol, aged about 70 and Mustakim, aged 13. Both are residents of Mymensingh district in Bangladesh.
From prima facie investigations, it has come to fore that the duo entered Assam through the Indo-Bangladesh border in Tripura on December 15 and were hiding in South Senimari village near Lahorighat.
It has been reported that Islam Mandol, who has a Bangladeshi passport, registered his name in the Lahorighat constituency’s electoral list under the name Nur Islam.
The police have initiated an investigation into how the Bangladeshi national managed to register his name on the voter’s list.
Police are convinced that both the arrested Bangadeshi nationals are part of a pro-jihadi network, which is trying to establish a strong base in Morigaon district.
Earlier on September 12 last year, two people were arrested in Central Assam for their links with Ansarullah Bangla. One Musadik Hussain was arrested in Morigaon, while the other one, Ikramul, was an Imam, and was arrested in Nagaon.
Assam Police had also destroyed one madrassa in Morigaon district after had confirmed its terror links with Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT).
During the last one year, more than two-dozen Jihadis have been arrested from different parts of Assam.
