Jorhat (Assam): At least 13 children were hospitalised after falling ill from consuming soapberries, commonly known as washnuts, in Assam’s Jorhat district, officials said on Sunday.
The incident occurred at Bor Soycotte Tea Estate in Titabar, where the children reportedly ingested the berries while playing on Saturday evening.
A senior health department official said the matter came to light later in the night after parents noticed a deterioration in the children’s condition.
The minors were initially taken to the tea garden hospital but were shifted to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) on Sunday morning as their condition worsened.
