ITANAGAR: A 50-year-old teacher from a private school in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lower Subansiri district has been arrested on allegations of molesting and raping several students. The school’s principal, who was aware of the crimes but took no action, has also been apprehended, a senior police officer told the press.
The arrest comes following an FIR filed by a concerned parent, which prompted the authorities to take swift action. Lower Subansiri Superintendent of Police Keni Bagra confirmed that the accused teacher has been accused of sexually assaulting at least two to three students from classes 5 and 6.
A case has been registered at the women’s police station in Hapoli under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The investigation into the matter is currently ongoing.
This disturbing incident comes less than a year after a hostel warden in Shi-Yomi district was arrested for alleged sexual assaults, including rape, involving multiple boys and girls from the school.
On August 1, Yumken Bagra, a hostel warden of a government-run school in Arunachal Pradesh’s Karo village, Shi-Yomi district, surrendered to a POSCO court, facing grave accusations of committing atrocities against 21 children over a span of eight years. Bagra’s surrender came before Justice Jaweplu Chai, the special POSCO judge, after the Gauhati High Court revoked his bail.
Originally granted bail on February 23 by a lower court, the High Court, distressed by the magnitude and nature of the case, took the initiative on July 21 to nullify it. The court expressed its deep concern, noting that such a severe case had been handled carelessly by providing bail to the prime suspect without any substantial justification.
