Established in 2016, the Indian Institutional Ranking Framework has emerged as a reliable and respected benchmark for assessing higher education institutions in India.
In 2025, IIRF evaluated more than 2,500 institutions, including over 500 universities and hundreds of colleges across various disciplines such as engineering, business, law, medicine, and liberal arts.
The Rajiv Gandhi University is followed by the Tezpur University, which bagged the 24th position, down from 16th rank in 2024.
The Mizoram University has been ranked at the 25th position. Its ranking dropped from 15th in 2024 to the 25th rank.
The Central Agricultural University, Imphal was ranked at 26th, and the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, got the 29th position. In 2024, NEHU was at the 18th rank.
The Nagaland University has been ranked 34th, while the Sikkim University was ranked at 36th and the Assam University was at the 37th position.
The Manipur University was ranked at the 40th position, and the Tripura University got the 44th rank.
In the private university category, Sikkim Manipal University, Gangtok, is the only institution from the Northeast to find a place in the top 50, and was ranked at the 24th position.
