GUWAHATI: In a significant move aimed at addressing the long-standing concerns of the Assamese-origin populace residing in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the issuance of permanent residence certificates (PRCs) by the Assam government.
Speaking at an election rally in Lohit district recently, Chief Minister Sarma highlighted that the decision reflects the Assam government’s commitment to the welfare and interests of people of Assamese origin.
He highlighted that the Assam cabinet has unanimously approved this decision, signalling a pivotal step towards inclusivity and equal opportunities for the Assamese-origin residents of Arunachal Pradesh.
“Soon the Assamese-origin people residing in Arunachal will be able to apply for government jobs in Assam. Their children can be admitted to engineering and medical colleges in Assam, using Assam PRCs,” Sarma was quoted as saying by a local daily.
Chief Minister Sarma assured that the Assam government respects the law and sentiments of the people of Arunachal Pradesh and efforts are afoot to find an amicable solution to this longstanding issue.
“We understand that issuing PRCs to non-APSTs is a sensitive issue in Arunachal,” affirmed Sarma, illustrating a collaborative approach towards resolving the issue.
Additionally, Chief Minister Sarma reaffirmed the Assam government’s commitment to treating people of Assamese origin residing in Arunachal Pradesh with equality and respect, mirroring the treatment extended to residents of Assam.
The issuance of PRCs to non-APSTs, particularly in districts like Namsai, Lohit, and Changlang, has been a contentious issue in Arunachal Pradesh.
The state witnessed widespread protests and violence in 2019 following proposals to grant PRCs to six non-tribal communities.
The unrest resulted in tragic fatalities and extensive damage to public and private properties, prompting the government to suspend further action on the matter.
