ITANAGAR: The Arunachal Pradesh unit of National People’s Party (NPP) has finally disclosed the identity of its inaugural candidate for the imminent state Assembly election slated for next year.
During a press briefing in this locale, Thangwang Wangham, the NPP state president, declared Paknga Bage, the party’s general secretary and a former MLA, as its candidate for the Dumporijo seat in the Upper Subansiri district.
“Bage’s selection as the party’s candidate is attributed to his notable track record as an MLA from 2014 to 2019, his unwavering commitment, and his remarkable enthusiasm towards serving the public,” Wangham was quoted as saying by the local press.
Responding to queries about the haste in announcing Bage’s candidacy, Wangham conveyed that the NPP aims to provide him ample time to lay the groundwork within the constituency.
Regarding the anticipated release of names of other contenders, the chief of the state’s NPP stated that three party committees associated with the candidate selection procedure are on the cusp of convening meetings on this matter.
Expressing his gratitude for the party leadership’s confidence in him, Bage affirmed his commitment to persistently advancing his efforts within his constituency.
In the 2014 assembly elections, Bage triumphed as an independent candidate for the Dumporijo seat. Nevertheless, his fortunes waned in 2019 when he contested from the same constituency under the NPP banner.
With four MLAs in the 60-member assembly, the NPP functions as a coalition partner in the BJP-led government of Arunachal Pradesh.
