Pasighat: The National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS) team has successfully completed the Arunachal Pradesh leg of the groundbreaking Brahmaputra River Rafting Expedition.

The Brahmaputra River, known as the Siang in Arunachal Pradesh, is famed for its unpredictable and ferocious nature, making this achievement all the more remarkable.

As part of the ambitious 916 km journey, the NIMAS team navigated 240 km of the river, tackling one of the world’s most dangerous stretches.

This segment, from Gelling—where the river first enters India—to Tuting, is notorious for its Grade 4 and 5 rapids.

These powerful currents have thwarted numerous previous attempts to navigate the route, making this expedition a significant milestone.

Notably, this is the first attempt to raft the entire stretch of the Brahmaputra, spanning both Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.

Upon completion of the Arunachal leg, the NIMAS team was warmly welcomed at Pasighat by the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of East Siang district, as well as members of the Water Sports Association.

The officials congratulated and applauded the team for their daring endeavour, recognising the courage and resilience displayed throughout the journey.

Col. RS Jamwal, Director of NIMAS, spoke about the achievement, thanking the local authorities and communities for their support. “This expedition is not just about adventure; it’s about pushing boundaries, conquering fear, and setting a new standard for exploration in India. The team’s perseverance through the perilous rapids of Siang embodies the true spirit of NIMAS,” he said.

With the Arunachal leg now behind them, the NIMAS team is preparing for the next phase of their historic journey—the Assam stretch of the Brahmaputra.

This part of the expedition will present new challenges, with vast and powerful eddies and intricate river pathways awaiting the team.

This expedition stands as a testament to human determination and the spirit of exploration, showcasing the immense power and uncharted beauty of India’s rivers.
