ITANAGAR: Recent heavy rains have wreaked havoc in Arunachal Pradesh, causing widespread disruptions to surface communication and claiming lives.
Officials from the State Disaster Management Department, on Monday, reported that landslips triggered by incessant rains have led to severe disruptions across several districts.
Damin, Parsi Parlo, and Panyasang administrative circles in Kurung Kumey district have been isolated from the rest of the state due to heavy rains this week, which triggered significant flash floods and landslides.
Multiple road blockages towards Damin via Parsi Parlo have been reported, severely affecting access to these remote areas.
The blockages have also disrupted electricity supply to the administrative circles, exacerbating the situation.
Emerging reports indicate a major disruption in water supply, leading to a drinking water crisis in these areas.
The Tezu-Hayuliang road is blocked at Mompani area in Lohit and Anjaw districts, while landslips have also obstructed the Dari-Chambang and the Palin-Taraklengdi via Langdang village PMGSY road in Kra Daadi district.
Additionally, NH-513 remains impassable at Geying in East Siang district.
In Shi-Yomi district, tragedy struck on July 5 when landslips claimed the life of one individual, adding to the toll of four fatalities due to natural calamities since April.
The impact of floods and landslips has been profound, affecting over 72,900 people and 257 villages since April.
Infrastructure damage includes 160 roads, 76 power lines, 30 electric poles, three transformers, nine bridges, 11 culverts, and 147 water supply systems.
Furthermore, 627 kutcha houses, 51 pucca houses, and 155 huts have been damaged.
The capital city, Itanagar, is facing a severe water crisis due to pipeline damage, with restoration efforts expected to take several days.
Meanwhile, Damin, Parsi Parlo, and Panyasang administrative circles in Kurung Kumey district are isolated due to flash floods and landslips, with road blockades hindering access.
A major landslip at Karsingsa on NH-415 prompted authorities to close the road for safety reasons, redirecting traffic via Gumto following an inspection by Deputy Commissioner Shweta Nagarkoti Mehta.
Efforts are underway to mitigate the impact of these natural disasters, with authorities urging caution and preparedness amidst ongoing relief operations.
