India’s rise to the third position globally in artificial intelligence competitiveness marks a significant milestone in the country’s technology journey, Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein said on Monday.

Citing a report by Stanford University, Mein said India has emerged as the world’s third-most competitive nation in AI, reflecting its rapid ascent as a global technology powerhouse.

The latest assessment places India behind only the United States and China in the global AI landscape.

In a post on X, the Deputy Chief Minister said the ranking, based on Stanford University’s Global AI Vibrancy Tool, underscores the success of India’s sustained efforts to build a strong, innovation-led technology ecosystem.

He noted that India has made a sharp climb in the rankings, moving from seventh place in 2023 to third in 2024.

Mein said the improvement highlights the impact of focused policy measures, a thriving startup environment and a growing pool of skilled professionals driving the country’s AI ecosystem.

He added that the Global AI Vibrancy Tool evaluates countries on key parameters including research and development output, talent concentration, private investment, innovation capacity and the policy environment.

India’s stronger performance across these indicators demonstrates its increasing ability to develop, deploy and scale AI technologies, he said.

The achievement, Mein added, reaffirms India’s readiness to play a leading role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence, with an approach rooted in responsible innovation, inclusivity and public good.

The Deputy Chief Minister also said global recognition of India’s AI capabilities strengthens the case for wider adoption of AI-driven solutions in governance, industry and public service delivery.

He underlined that regions such as the Northeast could benefit significantly from the integration of emerging technologies to enhance connectivity, efficiency and access to services.
