Guwahati: Havildar Leki Passang of the Indian Army’s Gajraj Corps has been awarded the Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak for his exceptional bravery and selfless service.
The prestigious award was conferred upon him on Republic Day.
Havildar Passang’s act of heroism took place on January 28, 2023, near Shungetsar Lake in Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.
A six-year-old child fell through an unattended section of the ice-covered lake, and without regard for his safety, Havildar Passang crawled 30 metres over fragile sleet and successfully rescued the child from beneath the ice.
His quick thinking and courageous actions saved the child’s life.
His unwavering commitment to duty and humanity is an inspiration to all. This prestigious award is a fitting recognition of his selfless bravery and exemplary service.
Havildar Passang’s recognition with this award highlights the Indian Army’s commitment to bravery and service beyond the call of duty.
The Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak is a civilian award presented by the Government of India for acts of bravery and selfless service.
The award is given in three categories—Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak, and Jeevan Raksha Padak.
Persons from all walks of life are eligible for these awards.
President of India Droupadu Murmu has approved the conferment of the Jeevan Raksha Padak Series of Awards – 2024 to 49 individuals.

This includes the Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak to 17 persons, the Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak to 9, and the Jeevan Raksha Padak to 23 persons.
The award consists of a medal, a certificate signed by the Union Home Minister and a monetary allowance.
