Khonsa: A hardcore cadre of the NSCN-K (Nikki Sumi) faction surrendered before the Khonsa Battalion of the Assam Rifles in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap district on Tuesday, marking another step toward restoring peace in the insurgency-affected region.

The cadre has been identified as SS Lt Nyamphua Hakun, who was reportedly involved in extortion, recruitment, and illegal tax collection across parts of Tirap district and nearby areas.

According to the Assam Rifles, Hakun’s surrender was the outcome of sustained outreach efforts combining relentless counter-insurgency operations with people-centric initiatives aimed at encouraging misguided youths to join the mainstream.

During the formal surrender, Hakun expressed regret for his past actions and conveyed his intention to lead a peaceful life.

The Assam Rifles lauded his decision and assured full support for his rehabilitation under the Government’s surrender and rehabilitation policy.

Officials said the surrender underscores ongoing efforts to curb insurgency and highlights the Assam Rifles’ commitment to fostering lasting peace and development in Arunachal Pradesh and the Northeast region.

Meanwhile, the Tirap district administration in Arunachal Pradesh has imposed an immediate ban on the use of camouflage or military-pattern attire by civilians while engaging in hunting or fishing activities.

An order issued on Monday by Tirap Deputy Commissioner Techu Aran stated that no civilian shall wear camouflage attire or carry arms while engaging in such activities, except authorised security personnel on duty.

“Such action of wearing camouflage clothing in the jungle can lead to mistaken identity by defence forces, especially amid rising militant activities in and around the forested areas of Tirap, Changlang, Longding and Namsai districts,” the order stated.

The order further prohibits civilian entry into forest areas for hunting or fishing after sunset.
