In a thought-provoking address at the 11th convocation of the National Institute of Technology, Arunachal Pradesh (NITAP), former ISRO Chairman A S Kiran Kumar emphasized the importance of sustainable growth and a development model that aligns with nature.
Speaking to the graduates on Monday, Kumar highlighted the need for a balanced approach that respects the environment while advancing technological progress.
“India has the potential to demonstrate that true development lies in respecting nature. We must move away from unchecked technological growth and consider the environmental impact of our actions,” Kumar said, urging the graduates to prioritize sustainability in their professional lives.
He further stressed the need for lifelong learning, acknowledging the rapid pace of change in the world.
“The knowledge and skills you have gained here are just the beginning. To stay relevant in a fast-changing world, it is crucial to continue learning. Without ongoing education, you may find yourselves unprepared for future challenges,” he advised the graduates.
Kumar also reminded the students of the privilege of studying at a premier institution like NITAP, where many students from less privileged backgrounds do not have such opportunities.
He called on the graduates to use their education and skills to contribute positively to the nation’s growth.
“You’ve had the privilege of studying here, and now it is your responsibility to contribute to the country’s development,” he added.
Reflecting on the role of technology in shaping modern life, Kumar encouraged the graduates to be mindful of its effects.
“The technology you hold in your hands has a profound influence on your lives. To bring about meaningful change, you must understand its implications and use it wisely,” he said.
He also acknowledged the efforts of parents and faculty, recognizing their sacrifices in shaping the students’ futures.
Kumar encouraged the graduates to make the most of the opportunities available in India’s rapidly growing economy.
“You are graduating at a time when India is witnessing tremendous economic growth. Seize this moment to showcase your talents and contribute with dedication and determination,” he said.
Kumar further emphasized the importance of self-awareness and the power of human intelligence.
“The innate intelligence within you far exceeds the artificial intelligence we aim to replicate through technology. Understanding and using this natural intelligence will enable you to navigate the world more effectively,” he said.
Reflecting on his experience at ISRO, Kumar noted that the organization’s success, despite resource constraints, exemplified India’s potential.
“India is now the fifth-largest economy in the world, with aspirations to lead globally by the time we celebrate the centenary of our independence,” he remarked.
He also lauded India’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, pointing out the country’s ability to manage its challenges while also supporting other nations. “India set an example by offering solutions without seeking economic gain,” he added.
Earlier, NITAP Director Prof. Mohan V. Aware presented a report on the institute’s growth since its establishment in 2010.
Despite several challenges, the institute has introduced innovative courses to better equip students for the changing global landscape.
Subhash Kumar, Chairman of the Board of Directors, expressed gratitude to the state government for its support in setting up the institute’s permanent campus at Jote.
During the convocation, 190 students received their BTech, MTech, and PhD degrees, with 12 students honored with gold medals for outstanding academic performance.
