ITANAGAR: In a remarkable display of commitment to democracy, Election Commission (EC) officials embarked on a gruelling trek spanning 40 km to reach Malogam village in Arunachal Pradesh.
Their mission – to enable Sokhela Tayang, the village’s sole voter, to participate in the Lok Sabha polls.
Tayang, a 44-year-old woman residing along the China border, holds the distinction of being the only voter in Malogam.
With no road access to the village, the EC team, accompanied by security personnel, undertook a challenging journey by foot, carrying essential equipment for polling.
Navigating hilly terrain and rugged landscapes, the officials reached the 52-Malogam Polling Station, located in the 45 Hayuliang assembly constituency and Arunachal East parliament constituency.
They remained stationed at the site until Tayang casts her vote on Friday, after which they will trek back with the equipment.
Living alone in the village following the demise of her parents, Tayang’s solitary presence underscores the logistical complexities faced in ensuring electoral participation in remote regions.
As polling unfolds across 102 constituencies in 21 states and Union Territories, Arunachal Pradesh stands witness to both parliamentary and assembly elections, symbolizing the vibrant spirit of democracy amidst challenging terrain.
