Guwahati: A Delhi court on Wednesday remanded a couple accused of hurling racial slurs, abusive remarks and threatening three women from Arunachal Pradesh to 14 days of judicial custody.

The accused, Ruby Jain and her husband Harsh, were produced before Magistrate Bhanu Pratap Singh, who sent them to judicial custody until March 11.

Earlier in the day, the couple was arrested by Delhi Police in connection with a case registered at the Malviya Nagar Police Station in South Delhi. The case was registered under BNS sections 79 (word intended to insult a woman’s modesty), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), 3(5) (common intention) and 196 (promoting enmity on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language).

The arrests followed an investigation into allegations that they had verbally abused three women from Arunachal Pradesh.

According to police, the incident occurred on February 20 during a dispute over repair work at a rented accommodation in the Malviya Nagar area. What began as an argument over the repair work soon escalated into a heated verbal argument, the police said.

Ruby Jain is alleged to have used abusive and derogatory language against the three women during the altercation.

Meanwhile, reacting to the incident, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu said, “Strongly condemn the shameful incident of racial abuse faced by our three young sisters from Arunachal Pradesh residing in Malviya Nagar, South Delhi. Such behaviour is absolutely unacceptable and has no place in our society.”
