ITANAGAR: A sudden cloudburst on Sunday morning unleashed chaos in Itanagar, triggering multiple landslides and inundating several areas with flood-like conditions.
Despite a recent lull in heavy rains, the unexpected deluge struck around 10:30 am, catching residents off guard and causing widespread disruption across the city.
Key sections of NH-415, a lifeline for Itanagar’s commuters, were submerged under water, stranding numerous vehicles and halting traffic flow.
In a bid to assist those affected, seven relief camps have been set up across the district, offering shelter, food, and essential supplies to displaced residents grappling with the aftermath of the natural disaster.
A Disaster Management Department official told a national news agency that the cloudburst had caused several landslides and flooding in different parts of Itanagar, highlighting the severity of the situation.
Responding swiftly to the crisis, district authorities issued advisories urging residents to steer clear of rivers and areas prone to landslides.
They also recommended relocating to safer zones amidst ongoing heavy rains.
Meanwhile, severe flooding along the Assam-Arunachal border in Sonitpur district has dealt a severe blow to transportation infrastructure.
The swelling waters have washed away crucial sections of land near the Mansiri bridge, bringing vehicular movement to a grinding halt on this vital roadway connecting the two states.
Authorities are currently assessing the extent of damage caused by the floods and coordinating efforts to restore normalcy along the affected areas.
The increasing water levels on one side of the bridge have made it impossible for four-wheelers to pass through.
Consequently, people are compelled to navigate the area using bicycles, motorcycles, or on foot, often under hazardous conditions.
With the road blocked, locals are now crossing the flooded river, significantly increasing the risk of accidents.
As Arunachal Pradesh contend with the aftermath of these natural calamities, residents and authorities remain on high alert amid unpredictable weather patterns and the looming threat of further disruptions.
