The BJP secured a decisive victory in the Itanagar Municipal Corporation elections, winning 14 of the 20 wards, while the People’s Party of Arunachal emerged victorious in the Pasighat Municipal Council polls, results announced on Saturday showed.

According to State Election Commission secretary Taru Talo, the BJP’s tally in the Itanagar civic body included four wards where its candidates were elected unopposed.

The Nationalist Congress Party won three seats, the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) secured two, and one seat went to an Independent candidate.

The opposition Congress failed to open its account in both Itanagar and Pasighat.

Women candidates made a strong showing in the Itanagar Municipal Corporation, winning 10 of the 20 seats.

Electronic voting machines were used in the elections to both the Itanagar Municipal Corporation and the Pasighat Municipal Council.

In Pasighat, the regional People’s Party of Arunachal won five of the eight wards to secure control of the municipal council.

The BJP won two seats, while an Independent candidate claimed the remaining ward. Four women candidates were elected to the eight-member Pasighat Municipal Council.

Meanwhile, counting of votes for the panchayat elections is still underway.

Ballot papers are being used for the panchayat polls, which include 186 zilla parishad member seats and 1,947 gram panchayat member seats, and results are expected to be delayed, the election commission said.

The civic body elections and panchayat polls were held simultaneously across the state on December 15.
