Guwahati: A United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) insurgent surrendered before the cops at Jairampur police station in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district, officials said.
The 20 year-old ULFA (I) rebel, identified as self-styled Lance Corporal Dhananjay Sonowal alias Bokul Asom, fled from the rebel group’s bases in Myanmar and surrendered before the police, said an official.
The Jairampur police have handed over Dhananjay to the Margherita police for necessary legal proceedings.
Sources said surrendered cadre Dhananjay hails from Borboruah in upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district.
Earlier on July 5, Arunachal Pradesh Police arrested two men from Assam’s Tinsukia district for extorting money in Namsai district. The men claimed to be from ULFA (I) and demanded 15 lakh rupees from a shopkeeper.
They arrested in Marwa under Chongkham circle of Namsai district. Police apprehended the duo while they were trying to flee after collecting an initial payment of Rs 95,500 from the shopkeeper.
The police also seized the extorted money, two fake AK rifles, a 9mm pistol, three mobile phones (including a keypad ACE model), and a Pulsar 125 cc motorbike.
