GUWAHATI: The revamped Tezu Airport in Arunachal Pradesh is set to be operational from September 24. After an impressive upgrade at the cost of Rs 170 crore, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Chief Minister Pema Khandu, will inaugurate the newly-developed infrastructure in the Lohit district on Sunday.
The impressive upgrade to Tezu Airport includes several key elements – an extended runway, a state-of-the-art apron, a modern terminal building, a fire station, and an Air Traffic Control (ATC) Tower.
Spread over 212 acres of land, the airport is now equipped to handle operations for ATR-72-type aircraft. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has been at the forefront of this transformational effort.
The to-be-inaugurated terminal building boasts a spacious 4,000 square meters area with a peak-hour capacity to accommodate 300 passengers comfortably. Presently equipped with five check-in counters, this number is set to increase to eight in the future.
Furthermore, the airport offers two arrival carousels and two dedicated aircraft parking bays for ATR-72-type aircraft, making it a versatile transportation hub.
Notably, the terminal building incorporates a range of eco-friendly features, including a double-insulated roofing system, energy-efficient lighting, solid waste management, and a water recycling system for flushing and horticultural purposes. Additionally, it incorporates integrated rainwater harvesting to contribute to sustainable practices.
The substantial upgrade of Tezu Airport is anticipated to facilitate increased air traffic, promote better connectivity for the northeastern region with the rest of the country, and provide a significant boost to tourism and trade. Moreover, it is expected to generate employment opportunities, marking a pivotal milestone in the region’s development.
Tezu Airport, operationalised in 2018 under the regional connectivity scheme UDAN, has gradually evolved into a vital hub in the northeastern air network. It currently offers regular scheduled flights to Dibrugarh, Imphal, and Guwahati, courtesy of Alliance Air and Flybig Airlines.
