GUWAHATI: Arunachal Pradesh’s only medical college hospital have successfully performed a rare surgery on a 30-year-old female patient on Friday.
Cardiologists at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) near Itanagar, achieved a rare feat when doctors Rinchin Dorjee Megeji and Tony Ete along with a team of dedicated nurses, performed the first closure of the Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) of the patient through needle puncture on skin. Their efforts are being lauded as the entire procedure was performed under local Anesthesia.
“Heartiest congratulations to Dr Rinchin Dorjee Megeji, Dr Dr Tony Ete and the entire cardio team of @TrihmsOfficial for successfully carrying out the first closure of atrial septal defect – a hole inside the heart – percutaneously in a 30-yr old female in local anesthesia. Proud moment, indeed! Best wishes for the future!” wrote Chief Minister Pema Khandu on a popular micro-blogging website.
Explaining that the congenital condition and the challenge, Dr Ete told the press that this is the beginning of a new era in medical science in the state. He explained saying that the condition involves a hole in the heart’s septum, which, in most cases, naturally seals over time. However, in certain instances, it persists, leading to increased strain on one side of the heart and excessive blood flow to the lungs.
He also extended gratitude to Chief Minister Khandu, Health Minister Alo Libang, Health & Family Welfare Principal Secretary, and TRIHMS Director Dr Moji Jini for their unwavering support and encouragement.
