ITANAGAR: Three distinctive items from Arunachal Pradesh have clinched the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
The triumphant trio includes Adi Kekir, a flavourful ginger variant grown in the East Siang, Siang, and Upper Siang districts, Tibetan handmade carpets celebrated for their unique designs, and Wancho wooden craft items that showcase remarkable artistry featuring human heads.
Expressing his delight, Chief Minister Pema Khandu declared the GI tags as a “true acknowledgement” of the state’s unique culture.
Taking to a micro-blogging website, he shared, “Delighted to share that Adi Kekir (Ginger), Handmade Carpet, and Wancho Wooden Craft have been granted Geographical Indication (GI) tags. Truly an acknowledgment of the rich cultural heritage and skilled craftsmanship of our state. Let’s celebrate and promote our unique traditions!”
Adi Kekir ginger, renowned for its exquisite taste and size, hails from the verdant landscapes of East Siang, Siang, and Upper Siang districts.
Simultaneously, the handmade Tibetan carpets stand out for their distinctive designs, motifs, and textures, reflecting the artistic prowess of Tibetan refugees residing across the state.
The Wancho community’s wooden craft items, another recipient of the coveted GI tag, boast extraordinary features, with tobacco pipes featuring head-shaped bowls and drinking mugs adorned with warriors carrying heads.
The Wancho artisans also sculpt Lord Buddha, animals, and dolls with intricate details.
The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has been instrumental in supporting the state government’s initiative to promote these exceptional products.
NABARD not only facilitates the GI registration process but also provides crucial financial assistance.
Out of the 18 products backed by NABARD for GI registration, six have already secured certification.
Previous recipients include Yak Churpi, Khamti rice, and Tangsa textile, showcasing Arunachal Pradesh’s commitment to preserving and promoting its unique cultural heritage.
The Geographical Indication (GI) tag is a testament to the specific geographical origin and distinct qualities of a product, safeguarding its identity and cultural significance.
