Itanagar: In a major push toward energy reform, the Arunachal Pradesh government has launched a Rs. 6,519-crore initiative aimed at modernising the state’s power infrastructure, reducing losses, and ensuring a stable and efficient electricity supply without adding fiscal strain to the state’s finances.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced the ambitious plan on Monday, calling it a “transformative step” toward creating a power-secure Arunachal.
“Our target is clear—low losses, high reliability, and zero fiscal stress,” Khandu said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
The plan includes an allocation of Rs. 788 crore to reduce aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses, which have long impeded efficient power distribution, especially in remote regions.
Key components of the initiative include the deployment of smart meters, the creation of modernised power grids, and real-time monitoring systems.
According to Khandu, these measures will streamline power usage, minimise wastage, and offer consumers better transparency and control over their electricity consumption.
To safeguard public finances from the burden of such large-scale investment, the government will provide gap funding.

This mechanism is designed to bridge the shortfall between capital expenditure and revenue recovery, ensuring the reforms do not strain the state’s coffers.
“This initiative supports our broader developmental goals and prepares the power sector to meet not just today’s demands, but the energy needs of the future—particularly for rural and industrial expansion,” the chief minister added.
The move is expected to significantly strengthen Arunachal Pradesh’s energy landscape, laying a robust foundation for long-term economic growth and improved quality of life across the state.
