Itanagar: Pani Manju Joram has made history as the first athlete from Arunachal Pradesh to win medals at the Asian Cup Muaythai Championship in Taipei, Taiwan.
She clinched a silver medal in the traditional Wai-Kru ceremony and a bronze medal in the 57-kg elite category.

Khandu said, “Joram has scripted a history as she is the first athlete from our state to win medals at the Asian Cup Muaythai Championship.”
The championship, which included competitors from all over Asia, saw Joram compete against Yi-Ching Chen of Chinese Taipei in the Wai-Kru finals.
Athletes from across the Asia Pacific region delivered spectacular performances, showcasing their skills and determination during the 2024 Asian Muaythai Open Cup.
MuayThai, also called Thai boxing, is a Thai martial art and full-contact combat sport that uses stand-up striking, sweeps, and various clinching techniques.
This discipline is known as the “Art of eight limbs” as it is characterised by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees and shins.
Muaythai is related to other martial art styles such as Muay Chaiya, Muay Boran, Muay Lao, Lethwei, Benjang and Tomoi. A practitioner of Muaythai is known as a Nak Muay.
The 2024 Asian Muaythai Open Cup kicked off with a spectacular opening ceremony at the Taipei Municipal Gymnasium, showcasing the vibrant culture of Chinese Taipei.
The event, from October 17 to October 23, was graced by athletes and delegates from Hong Kong, the Philippines, Mongolia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea, India and Vietnam.
The event highlighted various Muaythai divisions, including Combat Elite, U23, Masters, and the cultural Wai Kru.

Mervyn Tan, Secretary General of the Federation of Asian Muaythai Associations (FAMA), expressed his enthusiasm: “Hosting the 2024 IFMA Asian Muaythai Open Invitational Tournament in Chinese Taipei is a testament to the rapid growth and dedication of the Muaythai community here. We look forward to witnessing exceptional talent and fostering greater camaraderie among the participating nations.”
