“This further paves the way for focussed conservation of endangered wildlife and rare flora found in these Reserves, which is essential for environmental sustainability and maintaining a balanced ecosystem,” the chief minister said.
CM Khandu informed that in February 2024, the Pakke Tiger Reserve was also included in the ESZ category.
The National Environment Policy (2006) defines ESZs as areas with incomparable environmental values requiring special conservation attention.
The ESZ status aims to protect the environment and biological integrity of areas outside protected zones, affected by human and climate factors.
The area covered by the Namdapha Tiger Reserve was originally a reserve forest. It was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary under the Assam Forest Regulation 1891 on October 2 in 1972.

It was later declared a National Park on May 12 in 1983 under the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972. In the same year, it was declared as a tiger reserve under the Project Tiger Scheme of the central government on March 15.
The Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary is rich in floral and faunal diversity. The park is named after the Kamlang River which flows through it.
