Itanagar: Anini, a picturesque town in Arunachal Pradesh’s Dibang Valley district, has been recognised for its growing adventure tourism potential at a national-level convention, an official said on Thursday.
The town received the ‘Best Emerging Adventure Destination Award’ at the 17th Annual Convention of the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI), held in Srinagar on Wednesday.
District Tourism Officer Lamwang Aran received the award from Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Aran said the recognition reflects the collective efforts of the Arunachal Pradesh Tourism Department, local stakeholders and the people of Anini in developing a responsible and sustainable model of adventure tourism rooted in resilience and respect for nature.
The region is gaining national visibility through structured trekking programmes and expanding eco-adventure initiatives.
Nestled amid towering Himalayan ranges and expansive alpine forests, Dibang Valley is home to the indigenous Idu Mishmi community and is known for its pristine landscapes, rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. The region offers significant trekking and adventure opportunities.
Popular adventure routes in the area include the Seven Lakes trek, Aeyo Valley trek, the Pomo Winter trek in Zambra Valley — home to the endangered Mishmi Takin — and the culturally significant Athupopu trek, the official added.
At the Outlook Traveller Awards, Anini won the Silver for Best Offbeat Destination in 2023 and the Gold for Best Offbeat Mountain Destination in 2024. Improved accessibility, targeted promotion and strong community participation have played a key role in its growing recognition.
