Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh State Pollution Control Board (APSPCB) has rescheduled the environmental public hearing for the 1,650 MW Subansiri Upper Hydroelectric Project (HEP), advancing it from October 30 to October 28.

In a circular issued on Friday, Upper Subansiri Deputy Commissioner Tasso Gambo announced that the hearing will now take place at the Menga Government Secondary School.

He urged all residents likely to be affected by the proposed project — including those from Siyum, Taliha, Payeng, Jaring, Daporijo, Gusar, and Dumporijo circles — to participate in the hearing and share their views.

The project is expected to play a key role in boosting hydropower generation in Arunachal Pradesh, but has also drawn environmental and social concerns due to its potential impact on local ecosystems and the displacement of communities.

The Subansiri Upper Hydroelectric Project over the Subansiri River, a tributary of the Brahmaputra, is a joint venture between the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) Ltd and the Arunachal Pradesh government.

The project has faced growing opposition from students and local communities. The protesters, mostly from the Subansiri Upper Hydroelectric Project Land Affected People’s Forum and students, demanded that the state government scrap the project. Critics have voiced concerns over its potential environmental and social impact.
