Itanagar: In a historic step to reaffirm shared ancestry and foster stronger ties, the Nyishi community of Arunachal Pradesh and the Mising community of Assam on Wednesday signed a Treaty of Friendship in Itanagar, marking a renewed commitment to people-to-people relations and mutual cooperation.

The treaty, signed between the Nyishi Elite Society (NES) and the Mising Ba:Ne Kebang (MBK), acknowledges the deep-rooted kinship between the two communities through their common ancestral lineage of Abo Tani. It seeks to further reinforce bilateral relations by recognising their cultural similarities and shared heritage.

Both sides reaffirmed that this age-old relationship, firmly grounded in history, continues to guide present-day engagement and must be preserved for generations to come.

The treaty document outlines 11 key articles of cooperation, focusing on mutual respect, shared ancestry, people-to-people contact, cultural exchange, social and economic dignity, and collective development. It also provides for the establishment of a standing coordination committee to ensure democratic and conciliatory mechanisms for resolving disputes.

Emphasising sustained goodwill and collaboration, the agreement calls for joint efforts in areas of common interest such as politics, economy, commerce, social development, and culture.

As per Articles 8 and 9, the treaty takes immediate effect and will remain valid for 15 years—until October 29, 2040—with provisions allowing either party to withdraw after giving a six-month prior notice.

The pact was signed by NES president Prof. Tana Showren, general secretary Heri Maring, All Nyishi Youth Association (ANYA) president Jamru Ruja, and All Nyishi Students’ Union (ANSU) president Lizen Gyadi.
