Itanagar: In a significant political development in Arunachal Pradesh, four MLAs belonging to the National People’s Party (NPP) have joined the regional party, the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA).

According to a notification issued by Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly Speaker Tesam Pongte, MLAs Namgey Tsering of Tawang, Pesi Jilen of Liromoba, Tapi Darang of Pasighat East, and Oni Panyang of Mariyang-Geku have joined the PPA.

The four MLAs had submitted declarations to the speaker on May 12, notifying a change of party allegiance, it said.

Both the NPP and PPA are part of the BJP-led ruling coalition government in Arunachal Pradesh.

The PPA, Arunachal’s lone regional party, now has six MLAs in the 60-member assembly.

In the 2024 polls, the BJP had secured 46 seats, the NPP five seats, while the PPA registered a victory in two seats.

The Congress won just one seat against the NCP’s three. There are three independent MLAs as well.

NPP, which emerged as the second-largest party in the 2024 assembly polls, is now left with one MLA—Thangwang Wangham, who represents Longding-Pumao. He is also the president of the Meghalaya-based party’s Arunachal Pradesh unit.
