Itanagar: Over 500 gm of heroin, 7 kg of cannabis and other narcotic substances were seized and 91 people were arrested by Naharlagun Police in Arunachal Pradesh under ‘Operation Dawn’ in 2024, a police statement said.
“Police seized 588.42 gm of heroin, 7,042.5 gm of cannabis, 48 gm of Lorazepam and 233.81 gm of Morphine from various peddlers,” Naharlagun Superintendent of Police Mihin Gambo said.
The operation also resulted in the registration of 41 NDPS cases during the year, the SP said.
Gambo stated that the operation yielded positive results compared to the previous year, with a notable increase in case detection and the implementation of stricter action against drug peddlers.
“These actions also resulted in the confiscation of a significantly larger quantity of contraband substances, demonstrating the effectiveness of the initiative,” he said.
He stated that the crackdown on drug-related offences has significantly impacted the overall crime scenario in the region.
Many thefts and burglaries, which were often linked to individuals struggling with drug addiction, have seen a sharp decline, the SP said.
He said that over 152 cases of theft and burglaries were registered in various police stations in the district last year.
He further said that ‘Operation Dawn’ has not only successfully curtailed the supply of illegal drugs but has also played a crucial role in preventing countless young people from falling prey to addiction.
“The combined efforts of the police and the community have played a pivotal role in creating a safer and more secure environment in the region,” Gambo said.
In addition to enforcement, the police carried out extensive awareness campaigns under Operation Dawn.
The police conducted awareness campaigns in schools, colleges, and rehab centers, urging young people to stay away from drugs.
Gambo noted that these efforts led many individuals to seek help for addiction and join de-addiction programs.
He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the residents of Naharlagun for their consistent support and cooperation.
